Minimal incision transumbilical myomectomy for giant uterine leiomyomas with uterine preservation: Sancavedú technique description

Abstract

Objective: To describe the Sancavedú technique for the excision of giant fibroids via a transumbilical approach and to evaluate its effectiveness in preserving the uterus. Design: An observational, retrospective, longitudinal study of 20 cases with large-volume fibroids (1,100–8,900 g) treated using a single umbilical incision and conventional instruments. Results: Complete excision was achieved in all cases without conversion to laparotomy. Uterine preservation was 100%, with a mean hospital stay of < 36 hours and low morbidity. No major complications were reported. Conclusions: The Sancavedú technique is a minimally invasive, safe, and low-cost alternative for the management of giant fibroids, allowing for fertility preservation even in resource-limited settings.
